Rats & Mice
Yes, Las Vegas has rats...
Rodents can be a big problem in the Las Vegas area. Rats are not native here, but have made their way in and are here to stay. While your typical house mouse can be a pest, rats are especially problematic.
- Roof Rat - This is the most common of the two types of rats found in our area. They like to live in high areas such as trees and attics so we highly advise trimming back trees that are approaching the exterior walls of your home. Like any other rat, they can cause real damage once inside your home like chewing electrical wires or plumbing. The tail on a roof rat is roughly the same length as its body, making it easy to identify.
- Norway rat - This rat is more grounded, and tends to nest in the dirt. Its tail is shorter than its body, and its ears are smaller than the roof rat's. The body of this rat is usually larger in size than the roof rat. Like its counter part, it can cause a lot of damage by chewing on important objects in your home.
- House Mouse - While the house mouse isn't quite as problematic, never underestimate the damage it can cause. Rats and mice are known to carry and spread disease, mainly through their excrement and from eating from food that is then consumed by humans. You should act quickly if you suspect you have a mouse in your home.
Determining if you have a common mouse or a rat can be done by examining their droppings. Mouse droppings are small, usually measuring 1/8" to 1/4" long. Rat droppings are significantly larger, measuring 1/2" to 3/4" long. Also, roof rat droppings tend to be pointed on the ends while Norway droppings have more rounded ends. Our monthly & bi-monthly pest control plans can cover preventive treatments for rodents for an additional monthly fee, but infestations will incur a higher cost to eliminate.
